Hawk is a 26 year old purebred Arabian gelding. His registered name is Bask O Gem. He used to do a lot of endurance racing, and has completed more than 1,200 miles in races. He used to like to go very fast. He participated in 23 endurance races and was top ten in 16 of those races. In fact he has even won before. He has also participated in Ride and Tie events. In 1990, he completed two 100 mile endurance races. One of them was the famous Tevis Cup Ride that started in Squaw Valley and ended in Auburn. He was required to finish the 100 miles within 24 hours. That year, 238 horses started the race, and only 102 horses finished. He finished in 35th place! Congratulations to Hawk for his amazing competitive career and his ability to inspire students to "Go the Distance!" Now Hawk likes to spend his time playing in the pasture with his best friend George, who is a very big mule that he has been best friends with for over 15 years. He loves apples and carrots and when he takes his students for a horseback ride, he likes to walk a little slow, and then trot to catch up with the rest of the horses. He thinks that is great fun! Reins on Manes would like to thank Hawk's parents, Terry & David Howe, of Windfall Ranch for so kindly sharing Hawk with Reins on Manes. He is a definite favorite amongst students, bringing smiles and confidence to riders of all ages! |
